Rarely drink or gamble these days so my fuck it switch is often just a bowl of ice cream when I could easily just go to bed. I'm fine with that. Wasn't gonna drink before Sydney Marathon but I had a boys trip last weekend and after a solid ride to Point Perpendicular Lighthouse we stopped in at the bowlo and I had a beer. One wasn't gonna slow my training and the following day was travel so no running anyway. I think it's in check for me right now.
I've been having something sweet every night after dinner and still coming in well under my calorie target each day and I too think that's fine. The stricter we be on ourselves the more likely we are to have a full on blow out, I reckon. I just had that one day where I stopped giving a shit.
I wasn't even bad at not drinking. If I had something important the next day I could easily not drink. I was just bad at stopping drinking once I'd started. At times it felt like there was no eventual stopping at all.
Sam, have you been to the GP for your cough? Do you have ventolin already? Could be worth going to the GP. 2 weeks is a long time to have a cold. My cough lingers because colds trigger my asthma.
Other things that can help is elevating your your head when you go to bed (sleeping with a couple of pillows under your head, this can stop the mucus from pooling). Another thing that can help is a humidifier, which makes sure you're breathing in warm moist air. Cold, dry air is irritable for the airways/
You also need to cut back on exercise while you recover. Especially cardiovascular which stresses the respiratory system more. If you're not sleeping well at night, you should def only be doing the essentials during the day and not adding any extra stress (exercise) to your body. It's already working hard to fight off the infection you had.
It's too hard to get into a GP down here. Even my Canberra GP is pretty booked out. It was the kind of thing that kept giving me false hope that I was coming good, then it would return of a night. It's all but gone now.
I can't sleep with my head on more than one pillow. I'm such a fussy sleeper haha. One pillow, on my back, like I'm laying in a coffin. haha.
I had the humidifier going for a bit there. seemed to help a little.
haha oh tell me about it! I had having a flare up or being sick because it means I have to sleep propped up lying on my back and not move haha. Worst but actually works in helping get a better night sleep.
Perhaps go to ED next time. It sucks there is such a shortage of doctors down the coast. I've noticed with less bulk billing GP clinics in Canberra, it's been easier to get into the doctor.
I'd def try and get an appointment int he near future just to get your lungs checked and maybe get a script for ventolin so you can have it on hand for next time. I think you can also buy ventolin over the counter but it's slightly cheaper with a script.
This is it. You can't live your whole life without it being switched here and there. It's not about preventing it from happening, it's about minimising the damage it causes and shortening the time it takes to switch it back.

That's awesome that you've got it under control.

Yeah, i literally don’t know if I would even be able to sleep like that.
I reckon that may have helped during one of my many coughing fits over the last fortnight. I reckon I’ll just book in with my GP in canberra.
My fuck it switch is easy to reach when I’m tired.
Almost never flicked it when I’m feeling good.
“stressed, frustrated, tired, annoyed or have physical ailments like a sore back”
All states of low energy
Ps: there’s nothing wrong hitting the fuck it switch.
Just dont leave it switched on for ages.
