Oh Sam! I'm so mad about the Chiro. It seems to be the healthcare model for Chiropractors and they are known for it. I've lost patients because they've been spending so much money on Chiro that they can't afford massage anymore. I don't try and talk them out of it, I advise that they need to do what they feel is best for them.
Healthcare professionals take advantage of the vulnerability of their patients and people will often continue treatment because the "caring" practitioner makes them fearful of what will happen if they miss an appointment.
I'm glad that you felt the "adjustments" were working for you. I recommend following Adam Meakins (aka the sports physio) on socials. He posts a lot of evidence based stuff and debunks a lot of what health care tries to sell to patients. He has like myself personally experienced and recovered from a lumbar disc injury too. He's a no bullshit and I think his communicate style might be suitable to you too.
It’s makes me mad too. But what can we do about chiros/healthcare professionals that cash in on people’s lack of understanding about how the body works? It’s just like car mechanics who take the piss because the customer doesn’t know any better
They can be reported to AHPRA for unethical pratice however Im not sure how much they will do. I try to educate them and provide information for them to then make their own decisions.
Healthcare practitioners take advantage of the vulnerable (Sams observation of mostly elderly in the clinic confirms this). But even if we do try and educate people on this, they have a lot of trust in the practitioner so may also deny the claims. I got mad about it happening to a patient of mine and a friend just said it's their money. Unfortunately there's nothing more you can do.
I think that a unit on empowering people to make their own decisions needs to be included in all health care courses.
Spinal manipulation in general is being debunked more and more too.
Yeah and as someone who put his back thru torture packing 1000s of scrums (but back is still fine), I reckon spinal manipulation sounds like biggest load of crap. Especially when the most likely culprit is just tight hips/quads and weak glutes caused by too much sitting
I liked going and felt as though I was getting something out of it. I just smelt a rat when he started saying I NEEDED to come more and more.
The more I think about the more I think it's the kind of thing you get just to feel a bit better, not for actual treatment.
I don't think the industry matters. You are going to find people who either bullish or stretch the truth for financial gain wherever you go. I think it's about helping people improve their bullshit detectors.
I think in my case I was particularly vulnerable because I was so scared of this injury hindering my ability to achieve my running goals later int he year and at the time was willing to try anything to ensure I stayed on track. Maybe they could sense that in me and took advantage of that, maybe they didn't. Dunno.
Yeah, I think that new year motivation has warn thin. Cost of living, constant fear mongering on the news, the good weather is gone, plus I think a lot of industries are severely understaffed and people are over worked. It doesn’t seem sustainable.
Thanks re last weeks blog. I wrote it in a real hurry and didn’t put a lot of thought into it. I thought it was average, but it’s important that each week is an accurate representation of where I was at at the time. All a part of the journey.
100% and I knew last weeks was never gunna be close. Didn’t even reread it before I published it. It’s just part of a system that keeps me on the right track. Just gotta get the junk outta my head.

Makes you think stressing about writing the perfect blog each week isn’t necessary
